Sela Ward to play the new President in Independence Day 2

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

The sequel to INDEPENDENCE DAY, still tentatively titled ID FOREVER, has added another new face to the cast. The latest addition is veteran actress Sela Ward who joins the scifi flick as the new President of the United States. She joins a growing roster of talent that includes the recently cast Maika Monroe, Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, Charlotte Gainsbourg , Travis Tope, and Jessie Usher.

The film will also see the return of INDEPENDENCE DAY President Bill Pullman who clearly will no longer be in office. Whether he has an amicable relationship with Ward’s character remains to be seen. But, the fact that Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Jeff Goldblum, and Judd Hirsch are all returning means we should see something of a passing of the torch between casts.

Ward is best known for her television work on the series Sisters but has also worked with INDEPENDENCE DAY director Roland Emmerich before on THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. She most recently appeared in David Fincher‘s GONE GIRL. Without knowing more about the plot, I am not sure whether her casting is a good or bad choice, but as an actress you could do a lot worse. The real question will be whether she can deliver as good of a speech as Pullman did.

ID FOREVER is slated to begin production in May for a June 24, 2016 release date.
