Separation: Rupert Friend, Madeline Brewer star in The Boy director’s new film

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

William Brent Bell, whose directorial credits include Stay Alive, The Devil Inside, Wer, The Boy, and Brahms: The Boy II, just recently wrapped production on the Orphan prequel Orphan: First Kill, but before we see that movie we have another Bell horror project to look forward to: Separation.

Open Road Films and Briarcliff Entertainment have jointly acquired the U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to Separation, and are planning to give the film a wide theatrical release on April 23rd.

Written by Nick Amadeus and Josh Braun, it centers on

the terrifying consequences of divorce and is the story of a young girl who finds solace in her artist father and her dead mother.

Rupert Friend, Madeline Brewer, Violet McGraw, Mamie Gummer, and Brian Cox star. A first look image can be seen below.

A collaboration between Rainmaker Films, Yale Productions and The Machine Room, in association with Post Film, Separation was produced by Bell, Jordan Yale Levine, Jordan Beckerman, Russ Posternak, Jesse Korman, and Clay Pecorin. Seth Posternak, Russell Geyser, Jane Oster, James Masciello, Matt Sidari, and Open Road's Tom Ortenberg earn executive producer credits.

Bell released the following statement:

So many of us know the pain of being a child caught between divorcing parents. Separation allowed me to tell a side of that story in the genre of film I love so much. I believe in the power of the theatrical experience and am thrilled we have partnered with Open Road on a large-scale release."

Ortenberg added that this is

another terrific genre film by William Brent Bell, with standout performances by Brian Cox, Rupert Friend, Madeline Brewer, Violet McGraw, and Mamie Gummer. The film is certain to entertain and enthrall audiences and keep them on the edge of their seats."

I guess we'll find out on April 23rd, if enough theatres are open at that point.
