28 Years Later: The Bone Temple‘s Nia DaCosta is slated to direct Prime Video’s upcoming series adaptation of Sex Criminals, the acclaimed comic by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky. DaCosta will direct the first two episodes of the series and serve as an executive producer.
What We Know About Sex Criminals
The official logline reads: “Suze is a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time. One night, she meets Jon…who has the same gift. And so they do what any other sex having, time stopping couple would do: they rob banks.“
It was recently announced that Imogen Poots (Outer Range) will star as Suze, with John Reynolds (Stranger Things) as Jon.
Prime Video gave a series order to Sex Criminals earlier this month, with Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick) and Tze Chun (Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai) set as co-creators. Nanjiani will also appear in the series. In a statement, Nanjiani and Gordon said, “Sex Criminals is the exact kind of thing Winter Coat aims to bring to life: love stories in weird places,” said Gordon and Nanjiani. “From the moment LuckyChap brought us Matt and Chip’s comic book, we knew we wanted to bring these characters to screen and are so excited to do that alongside Tze Chun and Prime Video.“
The comic was first published in 2013 and earned two Eisner Award nominations. A previous TV series adaptation was in the works at Universal Television a decade ago, but the project was scrapped.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
DaCosta’s last film was 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which was shot back-to-back with Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later. DaCosta’s sequel was seen as an improvement over Boyle’s film,
“I really was shocked by how much I enjoyed 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which I found compelling from start to finish,” wrote our own Chris Bumbray in his review. “The cast is great, with O’Connell and Fiennes in top form, while Mayor of Kingstown’s Emma Laird also pops up in a great part as one of the more evil members of the gang. Heck, even if you REALLY didn’t like the last one, give this one a shot. It’s such a huge improvement you’ll barely believe it.“
Despite the critical praise, the sequel underperformed at the box office, grossing $58.5 million worldwide against a $63 million budget. This has led to doubt that the third installment will ever get made, despite Cillian Murphy being slated to take a bigger role after his cameo in The Bone Temple.
