You might think that after the success of INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, the NAT-zee killin’ business would be a-boomin’.
But apparently WWII is so yesterday. The WWII of the future is in… the future!
That’s where classic comic character SGT. ROCK is now headed, courtesy of veteran action producer Joel Silver and the movie adaptation’s current creative direction.
The DC Comics tough-guy made famous for creating holes in many Germans with his ever-present Tommy gun will no longer be fighting beside his diverse Easy Company unit in the European Theatre of WWII.
“It’s a little bit in the future,” Silver tells the LA Times’ Hero Complex. “As a war movie, it’s not going to be ‘where it’s been,’ it’s going to be ‘where it’s going.’ We didn’t want to do Iraq, we didn’t want to do a contemporary war. We wanted to do a sort of futuristic war. It’s pretty strong. Chad St. John wrote the script and we’ve got Francis Lawrence involved in developing it with us. It’s not a ‘go’ movie yet but I’m feeling good about it.“
Lawrence (I AM LEGEND) is reportedly eyeballing the director’s chair, while St. John recently worked the script for an update of the Sean Connery sci-fi flick OUTLAND.
SGT. ROCK has been kicking around Hollywood for a while, but always with his muddy boots planted firmly in WWII. At one point, Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to play the stogie-chomping hero, while more recently there was discussion of possibly doing it 300-style with digital backgrounds, with Bruce Willis potentially wearing the helmet and three stripes.
And who might be the mysteriously random threat that the post-modern ROCK will face? I’m betting either aliens, hillbillies or rogue domestic appliances.
