Shailene Woodley is not sure she is playing Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-man 3

Last summer, Sony and Marc Webb issued the statement that Shailene Woodley was being cut from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 so that the story could be streamlined to focus on the relationship between Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker. Since then, not only have two additional SPIDER-MAN movies been announced but so have numerous spin-off films. It is obvious that there is a bigger plan in the works for the franchise.

But, does that plan include Shailene Woodley? The actress has appeared in the highly regarded THE SPECTACULAR NOW and the upcoming THE FAULT IN OUR STARS and DIVERGENT, so is there room built into her schedule to play the love interest to Spider-man? MTV asked Woodley at the Sundance Film Festival where she is promoting her film WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD.

“I don’t know anything, but seeing as how they picked up the next two DIVERGENT films, I don’t know how I would keep my sanity with two big action films in one year. But anything can happen.”

DIVERGENT is the first film in a trilogy and the second and third films are already planned for release in 2015 and 2016. It seems highly unlikely that Woodley could fit both series into her schedule. Sony never announced that Woodley was out of the cast or out of her contract to play the role, simply saying she would not be in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. I think it is safe to say at this point that the search will be on for a new Mary Jane.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 hits theaters on May 2nd, 2014 with the two sequels slated for June 10th, 2016 and May 4th, 2018.
