Sharlto Copley talks District 9 follow up, will it be a prequel or sequel?

Fans of DISTRICT 9…would you prefer a prequel or sequel?

While making the promo rounds for his new flick THE A-TEAM, Sharlto Copley (seen right), the star of Neill Blomkamp’s exceptional South African sci-fi tale, caught up with Empire and discussed just that; Whether or not DISTRICT 10 (not an official title, but c’mon, it’s about as predictable as sunrise) will continue with wicked ways of Wikus Van De Merwe or give us some much warranted back story. To hear what the man had to say on the matter, get low!

When asked point blank about the notion of a sequel, Copley said this:

“Neil wants it and I want it. Neil’s doing another film first. Then I think if everything goes according to plan we’ll do the second film in about two years time. That story can go in so many different ways. There¹s a whole universe. I’m sure a lot of writers say that, but we actually have an entire universe.”

He continues:

“This thing started shooting in 2005, and before we shot the film we shot Alive In Joburg and two other shorts as part of Neil’s creative development process. Those next two films actually had my character, Wikus, in them, although I wasn’t called Wikus in them. So they were two parts of the development of the world and where the story was going to go and all that.”

Okay, okay…but will the follow up film be a pick up before or after the last one left us?

“There’s a million ways you can go. Neil’s actually very interested in prequels as well; he’s said that a few times. We wouldn’t do the traditional Hollywood version of the sequel which would just be 100 aliens fighting humans.”

Nice. While Copley wisely remained mum, one thing he did confide was Blomkamp’s aversion to trite Hollywood remakes. I get the feeling he and Copley wanna do right by the original flick, thereby doing right by the fans. Personally considering DISTRICT 9 the best genre flick of last year, I cannot wait!

How about you?
