I’m not sure how many of you guys have seen Tim Sullivan’s 2001 MANIACS, but it really is one helluva good time. How could you resist gobs of gore, loads of luscious ladies (see up top left & below), and a stand-up-and-salute performance by Robert Englund as the meat-loving mayor with a proud southern drawl? Horror veteran Lin Shaye (top right) plays his wife perfectly and also just recently spoke to Fango briefly regarding the long-in-development sequel titled 2001 MANIACS: BEVERLY HELLBILLYS. Here’s what she said:
“The sequel is in progress, but no one knows exactly when and where it’s going to finally happen. The script is done, but we’re trying to coordinate Robert [Englund]’s schedule and the financiers, making sure we have enough money. But it will happen! Granny Boone lives! And she is still ‘cooking’ in the new movie—that’s all I can say!”
Don’t worry, Ms. Shaye, that’s all you need to say for me! At least we get confirmation that the sequel will eventually be happening. Tim Sullivan is on board again as writer and director. Here’s the plot:
After the sheriff refuses to cover up any further for the maniacs causing all the missing persons in the area, they’re forced to hit the road in what’s dubbed the “Pleasant Valley Traveling Road Show,” where the maniacs head across country in hopes of gathering more victims. We’ll follow a young TV crew called the “Road Rascals” as they find themselves mixed up with another one of the maniacs’ deadly festivals.
With characters this strong and a plotline this enjoyable, I do believe MANIACS has franchise potential. Let’s hope HELLBILLYS gets back on the road real soon!
