Shortlist for the Best Visual Effects Oscar includes Inception, Iron Man 2, Scott Pilgrim, and more

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences yesterday announced that they’ve whittled down their list of films that are up for the Best Visual Effects Oscar to seven contenders. Here they are, listed in alphabetical order:

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 1
HEREAFTER
INCEPTION
IRON MAN 2
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD
TRON: LEGACY

I’m a little surprised to see that David Fincher’s THE SOCIAL NETWORK didn’t make the cut. But then again, subtle use of special effects (that are no less impressive than the those of a CG-heavy film… more impressive, really) is practically an art of its own. I mean, how do you compare the creation of something like the “Henley Sequence” to the in-your-face shit found in ALICE IN WONDERLAND?

The final list of nominees will consist of five films, which means two are going to be dropped. Which two, though? Tell us what you think below.
