Silent Hill 2 director?

I must give credit to Bloody Disgusting for catching this little tidbit, hidden in an interview with author Bret Easton Ellis on ChuckPalahniuk.net. Simply put, it reveals that Roger Avary is attached to direct SILENT HILL 2. Or maybe not “direct”, but he is going to be “shooting” it, to quote Ellis.

A few years ago, Avary said he wouldn’t work on SH2 if Christophe Gans wasn’t going to be involved (Avary wrote the screenplay for the first one). But that was a few years ago, and if given the chance to direct, would Avary feel the same way? SILENT HILL 2’s status has been a huge question mark for a long time now, and while this doesn’t mean it’s any close to actually happening, it’s an intriguing possibility.

The first one, while really great looking, is a true mess of a movie, and I really have to blame the screenplay. Would a second go-round, with Avary at the helm, really be a good thing?
