Another in-depth featurette for Joseph Kosinski‘s OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise, has popped online, this time focusing on the Sky Tower. Serving as the operating base for Cruise and co-star Andrea Riseborough, the set piece used to recreate the spindling tower for the film is an innovative and simple piece of work. The filmmakers went to a volcano in Maui to shoot footage of the sky and clouds in all different types of light, then projected it on surrounding screens on the actual set. This allowed the actual reflection of that light on the set, effectively recreating the “effect” of real light on the set.
Where many would deem to use artificial lighting or blue/green screen, Kosinski took a much more direct and simplified approach that has helped to make a more organic and immersive environment, as evidenced in the trailers thus far. Seeing the work that’s gone into the production, the dedication of the actors, and the “small” story approach being taken gives me that much more respect for the film and drives my anticipation for it even higher than before.
