Sonic The Hedgehog 2 speeds to April 2022 release date

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Paramount Pictures has set an April 8, 2022 release date for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2. Our favorite little blue nugget had a very successful first run in North American cinemas which saw the first installment gross $145 million at the domestic box office and $306.7 million worldwide which made a sequel pretty much a done deal.

The first SONIC THE HEDGEHOG had quite the road to financial success with began with widespread negativity following the first trailer for the film which led to fan backlash and the film being delayed from its initial release date. Being that video game films tend to be a bust at the box office and with critics, all signs pointed to SONIC being DOA but the film was greeted with a positive reception, with Jim Carrey's portrayal of Dr. Robotnik getting notable praise. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG also has the distinction of being one of the final notable films to play without much interruption in theaters before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed every major title that followed.

So where could a sequel be headed? Although the film focused on Sonic, the post-credits scene introduced Tails and a team-up between these characters is something director Jeff Fower is excited to do in the follow-up. The news of the sequel's release date comes just as Paramount announces release dates and changes for some of its upcoming films, including a delay for A QUIET PLACE PART II and TOP GUN: MAVERICK. Besides the release date, there is no other word on sequel news regarding the film. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are likely to reprise their human roles in the film although nothing is confirmed.
