Sonic the Hedgehog 2, sequel

Gotta go fast, again! There may have been a few bumps along the way, but once it was finally released, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG was largely embraced by audiences as a harmless yet humorous family film, and it seems that Paramount Pictures and Sega are ready for more from the little blue speedster.

According to Variety, the studios have confirmed that they're getting the ball rolling on a SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 and that Jeff Fowler will return to direct, as will screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller. The sequel is still in the development stage, so nothing has been decided regarding casting or when production might kick off, but I would imagine that James Marsden and Ben Schwartz would be back for more. The first film did tease a little of where the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG sequel might go, as a post-credit scene featured Tails, the twin-tailed fox, emerging from a ring portal in search of Sonic.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG featured the voice of Ben Schwartz as Sonic, who is a super-powered blue hedgehog from an alternate dimension who has been hiding out on earth to hide from those who want to harness his super speed. When he loses his magical golden rings, which allow him to travel between dimensions, he turns to a small-town cop (James Marsden) for help. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG was released in theaters on February 14th, and in that time, managed to score $306.6 million worldwide, although its China release was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it did receive an early Digital release in March.

The official synopsis for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG:

Based on the global blockbuster video-game franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is now available on DVD/Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD, so be sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray.
