Wow, searching the JoBlo archives I see we’ve been reporting on this rumored SPAWN sequel for the past few years, and as the newest member of the team here, I’m inclined to keep the tradition alive with this latest bit of info.
Yes, Todd MacFarlane has been talking about SPAWN 2 for ages, but now? He’s officially started writing it. “The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years,” McFarlane said. “The movie idea is neither a recap or continuation. It is a standalone story that will be R-rated. Creepy and scary….The tone of this ‘Spawn’ movie will be for a more older audience. Like the film ‘Departed.'”
I’m not exactly which DEPARTED film he’s talking about, but I’m guessing it’s not the one where multiple people get shot in the face and everyone wins Oscars. Though I guess yes, that was for an “older audience.”
So what are the odds on this actually getting made within our lifetimes? Lord knows there are worse properties than SPAWN to revisit, and think what you will about the original film, but the source material is ripe for a proper big screen translation. And maybe now with modern CGI technology we can see a fight set in hell that doesn’t look like a Sega Genesis game.
