While Todd McFarlane's big-screen Spawn reboot remains in development, McFarlane is looking to expand the franchise with a new TV series. It's been announced that McFarlane has partnered with wiip, the studio behind HBO's Mare of Easttown, to develop Sam and Twitch as a premium TV series.

Sam and Twitch will focus on Detectives Sam Burke and "Twitch" Williams, two of Spawn's most popular human character who appeared in the very first issue of Spawn nearly thirty years ago. The series will be developed and executive produced by Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg, the pair behind Epix's Condor TV series. "My two detective characters Sam Burke and "Twitch" Williams appeared in the very first issue of SPAWN #1 back in 1992. Since then, they've become fan favorites and have branched out into their own comic series throughout the years," said McFarlane in a statement. "Their stories, blending traditional crime noir and the supernatural, is a combination that I've always thought would make for an entertaining television drama. The addition of wiip and the creative writing skills of Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg make for a very compelling team that we all hope leads to the entertaining show we know this can be. If you like cool, moody, creepy, odd crime stories, this will be your cup of tea!" Sounds like fun, but will it get made?

No studio or streaming service is attached to Sam and Twitch at the moment, but it would seem that Todd McFarlane is hoping this will launch a Spawn cinematic universe. The comic creator told THR that Blumhouse Productions, who are producing the big-screen Spawn adaptation, will soon be seeking a studio to partner on the film. "Then the conversation will be if that studio just wants Spawn, or if it would like more," reads THR's report. The Spawn movie is set to star Jamie Foxx as Spawn and Jeremy Renner as "Twitch" Williams, but given how long the project has remained in development hell, I'll believe it when I see it.
