Spider-Man reboot will be in 3D

It’s a move that has been speculated for a while but Sony Pictures made it official today – the next SPIDER-MAN movie will be in 3D. Of course this is the new Marc Webb-directed SPIDER-MAN reboot and not the Sam Raimi sequel that had been in development as was long rumored for the treatment. Was Raimi’s reluctance to shoot in the new format du jour part of the reason for his dismissal? Not sure…

The film will be released in 3D on July 3, 2012. Jeff Blake, Chairman of Sony Pictures, had this to say in the statement:

“Spider-Man is the ultimate summer movie-going experience, and we’re thrilled the filmmakers are presenting the next installment in 3D. Spider-Man is one of the most popular characters in the world, and we know audiences are eager and excited to discover Marc’s fantastic vision for Peter Parker and the franchise.”

What I find slightly peculiar about the announcement is their prior assertions that this movie would focus more on Peter Parker’s high school life. Is that a storyline that lends itself to the 3D process? What do you think about this move?
