Break out your old records of “Shark Sandwich.” Rob Reiner will be returning to his classic rock mockumentary after forty years to film the sequel to 1984’s This is Spinal Tap. Reiner’s comedy is a famous satire of the chronically flawed rock band Spinal Tap, which features comedic actors Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer as the English band. The film follows Spinal Tap as they encounter mishap after mishap during their run as a music group, including concert set-ups that don’t quite work out, awful reviews, getting lost on the way to the stage and a number of other classic gags.

Variety has reported that Rob Reiner is planning to film his sequel in February of 2024. McKean, Shearer and Guest are set to reprise their roles. Reiner will once again be portraying Martin “Marty” Di Bergi as he catches back up with the aged rock band. The sequel is reportedly aiming to mimic the style of Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz, which was the famous concert film that documented the farewell tour of the Canadian-American rock group The Band. The movie was originally planned for release in March of 2024. However, the writers’ and actors’ strike caused the delay and a new release date has not yet been revealed. The sequel will be featuring guest appearances as Reiner revealed on the RHLSTP With Richard Herring podcast that Paul McCartney, Elton John and Garth Brooks are slated to make cameos.

Last summer, Reiner told Deadline, “The plan is to do a sequel that comes out on the 40th anniversary of the original film and I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one? For so many years, we said, ‘nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story.”

Reiner also revealed, “They haven’t spent any time together recently, and that became the premise. The idea was that Ian Faith, who was their manager, he passed away. In reality, Tony Hendra passed away. Ian’s widow inherited a contract that said Spinal Tap owed them one more concert. She was basically going to sue them if they didn’t. All these years and a lot of bad blood we’ll get into and they’re thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert.”
