Season 3 of AMC’s hit zombie skein “The Walking Dead” returns to the air October 14th, and although that’s still a few months away, the 100th issue release of Image Comics’ graphic novel this past week has stirred some press. Partaking in the circuit was Sarah Wayne Calies (below), who plays the embroiled Lori Grimes in the show. Well, Ms. Callies had a lot to say about her character’s motivated arc, even go so far as to spoil some of the actions depicted the comic, but not yet the TV series. So if you’re familiar with only the latter, peruse at your own peril. Otherwise dig the f*ck in!
About her relationship with Shane, Callies stated:
“The bomb that went off between Rick and Lori in the final episode of the second season was not, ‘Oh my God, you told me to kill Shane, oh my God, you killed Shane’ — the bomb that went off was I wanted to kill Shane.”
Continuing: “did everything she could to handle Shane; she didn’t tell Rick to kill him, she told him to watch his back and she was right — and the right man ended up winning that fight…Lori’s fear is that in killing Shane, Rick became Shane and that he’s turned into a man who’s not a humane, compassionate person but somebody who is now somewhat cold and bloodthirsty.”
About her own fate in the show, Callies added:
“Frank Darabont and I actually — before he was tragically and unfairly removed from the show — we used to argue about it…I argued that it was necessary to kill Lori and I feel very strongly that for all of the other deviations we may have from the comic book, killing Lori does something to Rick that is vital for the story and can’t be done any other way.”
And more:
“I’ve said from the beginning, not only am I OK with Lori dying but I think she has to…I’ve played this character with an eye toward an end.”
Sounds like a grim season of TWD abounds…
