Just when we thought screenwriter Steve Zaillian would swoop in to save Jack Ryan’s day, Deadline is now reporting that the SCHINDLER’S LIST/CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER scribe has “had a change of heart” and withdrawn from the project in recent weeks.
While that may be a bummer for you fans of the Tom Clancy character, the good thing is that Paramount seems determined to want to make a worthwhile film. Deadline says “that an OK version of Ryan could have been put into production this year, but the priority is more about launching a new franchise then filling a release slot.”
But if you’ve been pining for more Chris Pine this year (sorry, that was terrible), the good news is that STAR TREK 2 will now move to the forefront of the actor’s schedule. Though it’s not yet certain whether J.J. Abrams (SUPER 8) will man the Starship Enterprise a second time around (plus the script is still being written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Damon Lindelof), Paramount is expecting to begin production on the sci-fi sequel this fall to be able to make its projected June 29, 2012 release date. Yeah. Let’s hope they take their own advice: “…the priority is more about launching a new franchise then filling a release slot.”
