Captain's Log, Stardate 0227201.9. We’ve received a transmission from Mothership CBS All Access that STAR TREK: DISCOVERY will be beaming up for a third season on the subscription-based video-on-demand platform. Set to act as co-Commanding Officer for the upcoming season will be Discovery writer Michelle Paradise, who boarded the show in season two. As per the new season setup, Paradise has been promoted to a co-showrunner role alongside Alex Kurtzman.

"Michelle joined us midway through season two and energized the room with her ferocious knowledge of Trek," Kurtzman said. "Her grasp of character and story detail, her drive and her focus have already become essential in ensuring the Trek legacy, and her fresh perspective always keeps us looking forward. I’m proud to say Michelle and I are officially running Star Trek: Discovery together."

The announcement of Discovery’s third season renewal arrives not long after CBS All Access engaged in the development of a Michelle Yeoh-led spinoff. In the spinoff, Yeoh will reprise her role as Philippa Georgiou, an agent of Section 31, a shadowy intelligence agency operating within the Federation. As part of the plan to get Trekkies reacquainted with Yeoh’s character, Georgiou is set to be featured in select episodes of Discovery’s second season.

When asked for comment about her Star Trek role back in January, Yeoh enthusiastically commented, “I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories,” the CRAZY RICH ASIANS star said. “Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!’”

If that’s not enough Star Trek for you, I’ll remind you that a Trek-based animated comedy titled STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS is also on the way, in addition to a Patrick Stewart-led live-action drama. Furthermore, Nickelodeon is also developing a Star Trek animated series targeted at younger viewers called STARFLEET ACADEMY, which hails from THE O.C. duo Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

“The massive success of Star Trek: Discovery's second- season launch exceeded our expectations in both driving subscriber growth and generating a phenomenal response from Star Trek fans,” said Julie McNamara, executive vp originals at CBS All Access. “With Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise at the helm, we look forward to continuing Star Trek: Discovery's journey, growing the Star Trek franchise on CBS All Access and bringing fans new Star Trek stories for many years to come.”
