Back in 1997 I remember seeing Paul Verhoeven’s STARSHIP TROOPERS on opening day when it hit theaters, and it quickly became one of my favorite movies ever. Yes, after watching it a few times since, I’ve realized that it’s really not that great of a movie, but it’s still entertaining as hell, and that counts for something!

We’ve been hearing about another STD sequel to TROOPERS in the works, and today Production Weekly confirms the rumors, and announces who the director will be. Get ready, it’s… Edward Neumeier! Yay! Wait…. who? He’s the dude that not only wrote the first TROOPERS, but wrote STARSHIP TROOPERS 2, and a little movie called ROBOCOP. Yes, he’s written some genius stuff in the past… but he’s also written some shit too, namely ANACONDAS, but we won’t hold that against him. He’s making his directorial debut with TROOPERS 3, from his own screenplay. Cool! Hopefully it’ll end up like SEED OF CHUCKY, which was directed by series writer Don Mancini. These guys know the material better than anyone else!

Nobody has been officially cast yet, but Casper Van Dien is in talks to reprise his role as Johnny Rico. Good shit. Filming is set to begin this March on location in South Africa, with a fall release if all goes well. Bring on that sweet gratuitous sex and violence we all love so much!!! Too bad Denise “The Piece” Richards won’t be back for a sequel…
