Stephen Gaghan polishing script for One Thousand A.E., the M. Night/Smith project?

Boy oh boy…

Remember that really odd sounding sci-fi film M. Night Shyamalan was setting up for Will and Jaden Smith to star in? Remember how we all thought, or at least hoped, it might be an April Fool’s day joke? Well, here’s an even more head-shaking update.

Turns out Stephen Gaghan (TRAFFIC, SYRIANA, seen above) has been brought in to polish the previously untitled sci-fi epic. The film, now referred to as ONE THOUSAND A.E., is being directed by M. Night for Sony Pictures and Overbrook Entertainment. Gary Whitta (BOOK OF ELI) wrote the original draft, which was then tailored by Shaymalan to fit his sensibilities. Now, Gaghan has come in to make the sumbitch hum!

Here’s the skinny, according to Variety:

Will and Jaden Smith are set to star as a father and son who crash-land on Earth one thousand years after mankind has abandoned the planet. The crash leaves the elder Smith badly injured, and it’s up to the boy to find help in what is now a strange and dangerous place.

Yeah, just can’t say I care too much about this one. Gaghan, usually known for serious work, is clearly copping a paycheck here. Can’t fault him there, but if he goes HAVOC on us, then we might.

I guess now is as good a time as any to let us know how you’re feeling ONE THOUSANDE A.E.
