Stranger Things’ Joe Keery stars in killer internet influencer movie Spree

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Social media influencer drama is all the rage right now (at least I assume it is, as that's what's always trending on Instagram while I try to look up SIMPSONS clips and Garfield-Minus-Garfield posts in peace). Tha's because influencers – even on the internet – can amass a lot of fame and money if they're lucky or saavy enough. And, look, seeking fame by "any means necessary" isn't a new phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination (before that it was reality shows, and before that it was America's Funniest Home Videos, and before that it was robbing banks, etc., etc.) It's just internet notoriety and "influencer culture" are just the newest permutations of it.

And that's what the new movie SPREE – starring STRANGER THINGS' Joe Keery – is all about. Here's the official synopsis:

Meet Kurt, from @KurtsWorld96 (Joe Keery). He dreams of sitting atop a social media empire, but for now he drives for the rideshare company Spree. Fortunately, Kurt has come up with the perfect way to go viral: #TheLesson. He’s decked out his car with cameras for a nonstop livestream full of killer entertainment – murdering his passengers. In the middle of all this madness, a stand-up comedian (Sasheer Zamata) with her own viral agenda crosses Kurt’s path and becomes the only hope to put an end to his misguided carnage.

Sounds intriguing, if done well. With films like NERVE and GUNS AKIMBO, it looks like movies about "social media gone mad" is becoming a new genre. Let's just hope they don't come off as cringey twenty years from now, the way something like HACKERS does for us today.

Anyway, SPREE – directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko and also starring Sasheer Zamata, David Arquette, Kyle Mooney, Mischa Barton, Frankie Grande, and John DeLuca – will be released in theaters, digital, and On Demand August 14th.

So what do you guys think? Have any bad rideshare experiences? Either way, sound off below!
