The Batman: Streams of Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’ surge after being featured in the film

Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” acts as a sort of unofficial theme for Bruce Wayne in The Batman and it appears that being featured in the film has sparked a lot of interest in the song as its streams have soared since the film’s release.

According to Billboard, the streaming success actually began after the release of the film’s trailer. The song, which comes off Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind, appears twice in The Batman, as well as in trailers leading up to the film’s debut. About a week after the trailer’s release, “Something in the Way” debuted on Billboard for the first time in September 2020. It reached No. 2 on Rock Digital Sales and No. 45 on the all-genre Digital Song Sales charts.

Within the first four days of the film’s release, “Something in the Way” earned 3.1 million on-demand official U.S. streams. For days prior to the release of the film, the number was about 373,000 which means the song saw a 734 percent increase over the given period. As of last Friday, “Something in the Way” was sitting at No. 3 on Spotify’s daily ranking of the top 50 streaming songs in the U.S. with 803,000 plays for the day.

“Something in the Way” was never released as a single off of Nevermind so it’s interesting to see it find great success 31 years after its release. Director Matt Reeves thought it was a good song to express Bruce Wayne’s mindset for his film and it does give Robert Pattinson’s take a bit of emo cred.
