This week Dave Bautista gets to show off more of his action-comedy muscles to the world in the new movie STUBER and was set to do it all again next month with the movie MY SPY. But now fans ready to see him dish out kicks and quips will have to get by with just the one movie this summer, as STX Films has officially pulled MY SPY from its release next month, confirming no new release at this time.

Variety reports that STX pulled the film in no way relating to its quality, but rather to more strategically position it during the less-crowded first quarter of 2020 – the report hinting it could be as early as January. As noted above, MY SPY was set to come out on August 23, a little over one month after his movie STUBER (with Kumail Nanjiani), and sources have told Variety that the studio is looking to give more breathing room between the movies.

More family-friendly than STUBER, MY SPY aired some footage at CinemaCon this year to some solid reception, with viewers continuing to praise Bautista’s comedic chops. Directed by Peter Segal (GET SMART), SPY follows a secret agent who has to enlist the help of a 9-year-old girl in order to solve a case, and word is everyone involved with the movie and the studio has “full faith” in it and its box office prospects.

While STX started off the year well with the success of the Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston movie THE UPSIDE, they suffered some serious hits this year with the box office duds UGLYDOLLS and POMS. The former has made $26 million worldwide off a $45 million budget (apparently just as much for marketing), and the latter made only $13 million domestically without an international release. August is shaping up to be a crowded month with HOBBS & SHAW kicking things off, and others like DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD, GOOD BOYS, 21 BRIDGES and more hoping to get in a variety of different crowds before the summer ends.

MY SPY will probably hit theaters sometime in early 2020.
