Suicide Forest Village: Takashi Shimizu’s new film comes to North America in 2022

The Grudge franchise creator Takashi Shimizu‘s film Howling Village just received a theatrical and VOD release in North America back in August, and now Cinedigm has announced (via Deadline) that they will be releasing Shimizu’s latest, Suicide Forest Village, in North America sometime in early 2022. They’ll be giving the film a digital and on demand release.

Scripted by Shimizu and his Howling Village collaborator Daisuke Hosaka, Suicide Forest Village was inspired by “a real forest in Japan known for its frequent suicides and disappearances.” The film follows

a group who come across a mysterious box with a deadly secret: the item holds a curse that quickly spreads to those around them. The source of the box is the ‘Jukai Village,’ a rumored location deep within the Jukai Forest.

Jun Kunimura (Kill Bill: Vol. 1), Yumi Adachi (Tokyo Vampire Hotel), and Asuka Kurosawa (Silence) star.

Brandon Hill, Manager of Acquisitions at Cinedigm, had this to say about the distribution deal:

Takashi Shimizu is a visionary director who helped bring Japanese horror films into the cultural consciousness. For the past two decades he’s been terrorizing audiences across the globe with his haunting style. Suicide Forest Village is a terrifically terrifying film, and we look forward to sharing it with audiences everywhere.”

Shimizu built the Grudge series from the ground up, starting off with short films that dug into the concept before moving on to the features Ju-on: The CurseJu-on: The Curse 2, Ju-on: The GrudgeJu-on: The Grudge 2, and even staying at the helm for the American remake The Grudge and its follow-up, The Grudge 2.
