Ha ha. Now here’s a story that offers a good chuckle!
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that says Summit Entertainment, in a full-fledged effort to raise the qualitative bar of the god awful TWILIGHT films, is conducting a hard search for high profile, Oscar caliber directing talent to bring BREAKING DAWN, the final film in the series, some much sought after prestige. To which I say, good mothaf*ckin’ luck!
The initial three directors Summit has submitted offers to include, get this, LOST IN TRASNLASTION writer/director Sophia Coppola (seen right), MILK and DRUGSTORE COWBOY auteur Gus Van Sant, as well as DREAMGIRLS helmer Bill Condon. Talk about shooting for the moon!
Van Sant’s people have confirmed that an offer has been made, with Coppola and Condin’s camp remaining silent so far. No deal is assumed to get done until Melissa Rosenberg’s detailed outline (adapted from Stephanie Meyers ultimate tale) makes its rounds among the directors in question.
Now, let’s open this bi’atch up for debate. First off, as much as I think the idea of Van Sant directing a TWILIGHT movie might actually be worse than him remaking PSYCHO, I’d actually be most intrigued to see his version out of the three respective directors.
Coppola I cannot see doing this, even if suffering a relative dry-spell after winning a screenplay Oscar for the exceptional LOT.
And that brings me to Bill Condon, who, of the three, is the one I can actually see taking this job. Not only does he have big budget, crossover sensibilities, he’s also toiled in TV genre fare early in his career, even directing CANDYMAN: FAREWELL TO THE FLESH back in ’95. Condin’s work is far more commercial than the others at this point in his (and their) careers, and we all know it doesn’t get more mainstream than a TWILIGHT movie.
So, who of three do you think is best to direct BREAKING DAWN? Who do you think WILL end up directing? Will it be another name entirely?
