DC Studios‘ Supergirl is easily one of my most anticipated movies of the year, and it’s so close I can almost taste it. To get people excited about Kara Zor-El’s upcoming solo feature, James Gunn shared a batch of colorful Supergirl character posters on social media, highlighting the film’s core cast. Each poster offers a fantastic look at characters like Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock), Lobo (Jason Momoa), Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), and Krypto the Super Dog. Each character stands in front of a differently colored Supergirl symbol, giving off punk-rock vibes.
What’s Supergirl about?
Supergirl will be directed by Craig Gillespie and scripted by Ana Nogueira. The film takes inspiration from the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. After her father is murdered and the one responsible is still out there, a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll seeks out Supergirl to help her on a vicious mission. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost.
Not your daddy’s Kara Zor-El
I’m a fan of the original story by Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely, and think this hardened approach to Kara is exactly the shot in the arm the DCU needs to separate itself from the old guard. Kara is in a terrible place during this story. While Clark has grown up on the Kent family farm, surrounded by loved ones, Kara has spent much of her life trapped in stasis, her family and the people she loved obliterated. It takes time to get over something like that, if you ever do. Then, Krypto takes an arrow to the knee, and Ruthye Marye Knoll comes calling for help. Despite her reservations, Kara will learn what it means to become a hero, even if she stops for a drink or two along the way.
Supergirl stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Emily Beechum as Alura, Jason Momoa as Lobo, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll.
