Swamp Thing season 2 not happening, despite success on The CW

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

The Swamp Thing television series from Len Wiseman and James Wan (purchase the complete first season HERE) was cancelled immediately after it premiered on the DC Universe streaming service in 2019, but when it was announced last year that the show's sole season would be airing on The CW (to fill in gaps in programming caused by the pandemic), that stirred up some hope that it might be revived for a second season. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that's going to be the case. Although the show did well when it aired on The CW from October through December, and even though it was popular with viewers on The CW Seed streaming app, there are still no plans to greenlight a season 2.

TV Line's Matt Webb Mitovich said,

Considering how quickly DCU pulled the plug, and then factoring in that the sets are long gone and any cast contracts are quite expired, sources tell me that all signs point to a Season 2 not happening, anywhere."

Which isn't to say that the Swamp Thing character couldn't show up in one of the other DC-inspired shows on The CW. The network's Mark Pedowitz agreed that it's "unlikely" we'll ever see Swamp Thing season 2, but said,

It’d be interesting to have Swamp Thing on Legends of Tomorrow, that would be a fun way to do it, but I’m not sure that would happen."

Legends of Tomorrow is how Matt Ryan was able to reprise the role of Constantine after his own show was cancelled, so we can only hope that Swamp Thing gets added into the show's heroic lineup as well.

Starring Derek Mears as the title character, Swamp Thing followed CDC Doctor Abby Arcane, played by Crystal Reed, as she

investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.

Maria Sten, Jeryl Prescott, Jennifer Beals, Virginia Madsen, Will Patton, Michael Beach, Henderson Wade, Ian Ziering, Kevin Durand, Andy Bean, and Adrienne Barbeau were also in the cast.

The pilot episode was directed by Wiseman from a script by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman. Wan's company Atomic Monster produced the show in association with Warner Bros. Television. Wan, Wiseman, Verheiden, and Dauberman also served as executive producers on the series with Michael Clear. Rob Hackett co-produced.
