This past summer’s TERMINATOR SALVATION bombed in more ways than one, leaving everyone a titch disappointed it wasn’t a better movie and that it didn’t make more bank at the box office. Funny how an equally shitty movie like TRANSFORMERS 2 got close to breaking box office records, and yet TERMINATOR SALVATION didn’t even crack the year’s top 10.
No one is finding this more difficult to swallow than Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek of Halcyon Holdings, who threw down $25M back in 2007 for the rights to the TERMINATOR franchise so they could produce SALVATION with hopes of creating a new trilogy out of the TERMINATOR universe.
Apparently Halcyon is looking into filing for bankruptcy, or rather what they can do to stay afloat. One of their options? Auction off the rights to the TERMINATOR franchise to the highest bidder. If it can bring in enough dough, the company may be able to stay above water long enough to ride out the recession.
So what does that mean for a fifth installment? McG was all about a TERMINATOR 5, but I’m not sure SALVATION was good enough, nor did it make enough money, to make that a viable option. That said, if a new company throws millions into purchasing the rights to the franchise, my guess would be that they would want to utilize that purchase and make a new installment to the series.
Hard to say at this point as the whole thing is being worked out. You can read all about the possible move over at LA TIMES in excessive detail, as it’s all quite interesting, if not a titch confusing. Lots of ins, lots of outs, lots of what-have-yous…
