Terrence Malick’s new film gets a title and an MPAA rating

When news of a Terrence Malick movie is revealed, I take it with a grain of salt. When an official MPAA rating is designated, I can be sure the movie has actually been completed.  Actually releasing the movie is an all together different issue.

The notoriously finicky director’s next film is now titled TO THE WONDER (previously known as THE BURIAL) and will be rated R for “some sexuality and nudity.” I hope that is Rachel McAdams garnering the rating.

The plot of TO THE WONDER will follow a philanderer (Affleck) who, feeling at loose ends, travels to Paris, where he enters a hot-and-heavy affair with a European woman (Olga Kurylenko). Said Lothario returns home to Oklahoma, where he marries the European woman (in part for visa reasons). When the relationship founders, he rekindles a romance with a hometown girl (Rachel McAdams) with whom he’s had a long history.

Christian Bale was originally going to star but had to drop out. No word on the roles Olga Kurylenko or Javier Bardem will play in the movie.

I put THE TREE OF LIFE in my Top 10 movies of last year, which I am sure will throw many Schmoes into an uproar, but I genuinely liked the uniqueness the movie brought to theaters.  You don’t often get to see an actuall piece of art in theaters very often anymore.  I even admired elements of THE NEW WORLD.  Malick is an automatic must see for me each time he graces us with a new movie.
