Sony Pictures has given director Joshua Wong’s Hong Kong typhoon survival thriller The Calm Beyond a digital and VOD release in the United States, and we have the trailer embedded above to help you decide whether or not this is a movie you’d like to see. If you would like to watch it, the movie can be found at THIS LINK.

There’s a tragic back story to this one: the idea occurred to Wong during an MRI scan. The idea was to make a movie about “surviving a storm and how you live after”. Sadly, Wong passed away from a rare form of cancer soon after the premiere of The Calm Beyond in 2020, leaving behind a wife and young daughter. This was the only feature film he ever made.

Wong crafted the story for the film with Heather Gornall, who then wrote the screenplay. Here’s the synopsis:

After a world-destroying typhoon has completely flooded Hong Kong, a young woman lives hidden in silence inside the remains of an apartment building, concealed from anything else that may also have survived the storm. Her stillness, though, ends when a small child literally floats into her life, and changes everything.

The Calm Beyond stars Kara Wang (Good Trouble), newcomer Sarinna Boggs, and Terence Yin (Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life).

Wong produced the film with Kathy Wong. Najeeb Khuda and Gavin Lurie served as executive producers. The director/producer also edited the movie and composed the score with Jeff Caylor.

Knowing that Wong passed away soon after getting The Calm Beyond out into the world does make me more inclined to see the movie; I want to support his work, and I’m interested to see what he made during this time in his life.
