I haven't seen THE DARK TOWER yet, but I thought it looked pretty cool. Now, admittedly, I haven't read the books yet (shame, I know), so I can understand die-hard fans being disappointed that their expansive and unique fantasy epic got turned into a simple action story. However, like I told a colleague just today, "I love me some Idris Elba, as well as watching guys in black trenchcoats doing flips and cool gun shit. I'm a simple man", which I stand by.
And like I said, I understand the disappointment in the film. And while one of the fans of the film was the author himself (who isn't shy about sharing his distaste for adaptations of his work), he did drop this tidbit during an interview with Vulture:
The major challenge was to do a film based on a series of books that’s really long, about 3,000 pages. The other part of it was the decision to do a PG-13 feature adaptation of books that are extremely violent and deal with violent behavior in a fairly graphic way…The TV series they’re developing now…we’ll see what happens with that. It would be like a complete reboot, so we’ll just have to see.
Though it's easy to see the words "complete reboot" and jump to conclusions, but to be fair he does say "like a reboot", which could also be due to the fact that the TV show was always going to be more fantastical and focus on a young Roland during the events of the fourth DARK TOWER book, WIZARD & GLASS. Or else it could be what we're all assuming he means, which is completely divorcing itself from a movie that not only was badly received, but no one saw in the first place.
