The Dark Tower TV Series will be totally canon with Stephen King’s novels

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

It was only a week or so ago that we shared with you guys THE DARK TOWER screenwriter Akiva Goldsman's comments on the planned DARK TOWER TV SERIES, saying: “The first episode of a show has been written…and the show is [The Gunslinger's] origin story, based on the fourth novel in the series, ‘Wizard and Glass.'”

Today we have an update on the potential series via DARK TOWER director Nikolaj Arcel and Indiewire.

Arcel sat down with the site and let slip some all-new info on the possible series, telling them the show will be “totally canon.” As opposed to the upcoming movie which is set to be a spin-off of sorts from Stephen King's novels and tell its own story.

Arcel on THE DARK TOWER TV SERIES:

It’s being written. I was part of writing the pilot, like the first season ideas and the pilot and the second episode. It’s gonna be awesome. What was exciting about that, whereas with the film, we were really trying to create an introduction and make a standalone film that could sort of live in itself, but what was also exciting, working on the TV show at the same time, is that is totally canon.

Arcel continues:

We’re going back in the past. It’s very, very closely adhering to the ‘Wizard and Glass’ novel and parts of ‘The Gunslinger’ novel. That was exciting to be even more like, ‘Okay, now we’re going to be able to even lift lines directly, or like [write] characters exactly as they are. Which, as a fan, was exciting in a different way.

On top of all of that, THE DARK TOWER star Tom Taylor (Jake Chambers) is also expected to return for the series, but unfortunately, there is currently no word on if Matthew McConaughey will be involved.

While there is no official word yet, the feature film's financiers, MRC and Sony Pictures, are also set to finance the first season of the series, which is said to run 10-13 episodes.
