The Evil Dead remake vs. Scary Movie 5: Place your bets!

In an unusual move, Dimension Films has shifted the release for SCARY MOVIE 5 and placed the film in direct competition with a real horror movie, Screen Gems’ THE EVIL DEAD. Both flicks will now open on APRIL 12th.

What could be behind this move? Neither film has much in the way of direct competition, other than each other, although Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi epic OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise, comes out on the 19th. Perhaps that initiated SCARY MOVIE 5’s date-jump, but it’s still curious that the Weinstein’s saw fit to slot it opposite EVIL DEAD, which figures to do decent business on its opening weekend.

That said, given the Weinstein’s long history of f*cking with their movies’ release dates, maybe it’s just something they felt compelled to do. May not be long before they change it again…

SCARY MOVIE 5 is directed by Malcolm D. Lee and stars Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Heather Locklear, Ashley Tisdale, Mike Tyson, Audrina Patridge, Kendra Wilkinson, Simon Rex, Molly Shannon, Terry Crews, Marisa Saks, Angela “Big Ang” Raiola and Sherée Whitfield.
