David Gordon Green reportedly in talks to direct The Exorcist reboot

The Exorcist, David Gordon Green, reboot

While any thought of a reboot of The Exorcist may seem sacrilegious, it seems that we're now on that path. There were rumblings earlier this year that Morgan Creek Entertainment were developing a big-screen reboot of The Exorcist, and now The Observer has reported that not only is the project moving forward, but that Halloween Kills director David Gordon Green is in talks to helm the film.

Morgan Creek Entertainment will be teaming up with Blumhouse Productions on The Exorcist reboot with Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James Robinson onboard on producers. It's also important to note that which The Observer has referred to the project as a sequel and not a reboot, and given David Gordon Green's recent success with relaunching the Halloween franchise, you could see where they might plan on taking The Exorcist. Much like how Halloween brought back Jamie Lee Curtis, an Exorcist sequel could bring back Linda Blair or even Ellen Burstyn in a similar fashion. As far as whether original director William Friedkin is involved, The Observer says that he won't be, and Friedkin actually took to Twitter last week to say, "There’s a rumor on IMDB that I’m involved with a new version Of The Exorcist. This isn’t a rumor, it’s a flat-out lie. There’s not enough money or motivation in the world To get me to do this." Although Morgan Creek had previously promised that they would never remake The Exorcist, I suppose they didn't say anything about making another sequel.

David Gordon Green's Halloween Kills is slated to hit theaters on October 15, 2021, followed by Halloween Ends on October 14, 2022. As far as The Exorcist goes, are you more open-minded to the idea of a sequel rather than a reboot?
