Mark Wahlberg‘s The Family Plan debuted on Apple TV+ last week, and according to Deadline, it currently stands as the most-viewed movie in the history of the streaming service.
Apple TV+ didn’t provide any numbers for viewership of The Family Plan, so we’ll just have to take their word for it. The action comedy stars Mark Wahlberg as a suburban dad and car salesman named Dan Morgan, whose secret past as an elite government assassin comes back to haunt him. “When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas,” reads the synopsis. “Determined to protect his family — while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime — Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity.“
Although the reviews for The Family Plan are decidedly mixed, the big streaming numbers may bode well for the development of a sequel. Director Simon Cellan Jones spoke of a possible sequel just last week. “They’d all be older and wiser. But, you know, it would definitely be a road movie. I don’t know whether it’d be Europe or South America, somewhere crazy like that,” Jones told The Direct. “Yeah, but I think it would look it would be a different story, but it would be the same family, and it would be because family never cures its problems. It just sort of puts them on hold for a while. I think they’d still be tons and tons of great material.“
Our own Alex Maidy enjoyed The Family Plan for what it was but wasn’t overly thrilled. “There is fun to be had in this movie, but it is perfectly suited to be watched on AppleTV+ rather than on a big screen,” Maidy wrote in his review. “I guarantee you will find some things to like in this movie but I sincerely doubt that you will love it.
