The Associated Press is reporting that film composer Howard Shore (LORD OF THE RINGS, THE AVIATOR) and mind-f*ck master David Cronenberg are collaborating on an opera version of Cronenberg’s THE FLY! Yes, you hear right- THE FLY- The Opera!
Apparently Cronenberg and playwright David Henry Hwang (M. BUTTERFLY) are collaborating on the project, with a scheduled opening date of 2007. Shore’s currently wrapping his work on Peter Jackson’s KING KONG, and has worked with Cronenberg in the past, including the score for THE FLY and the upcoming A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE.
I’m not one for opera, but I’m a sucker for THE FLY! How they’ll manage to rein act Jeff Goldglum demonstrating the art of eating a Twinkie through regurgitation, or the infamous arm-wrestling match in the bar should be interesting. Actually, wait…scratch that… How they’ll manage to do anything from the movie to the opera stage will be amazing! Could they have picked a harder project? I don’t know, but these guys must love a challenge.
Look for THE FLY, opera edition premiering at the Los Angeles Opera sometime 2007.
