The Shudder streaming service will be releasing the original documentary The Found Footage Phenomenon on May 19th, and with just over a month to go until the documentary is available to watch, a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Directed and produced by Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott, The Found Footage Phenomenon was crafted with the intention of tracking

the origins of the found footage technique and how it transformed with technological changes throughout the last few decades. The Found Footage Phenomenon features interviews with integral found footage directors whose films impacted the horror genre like no other sub-genre has, around the turn of the millennium.

According to the film’s IMDb page, it features the likes of Dean Alioto, Stefan Avalos, James Cullen Bressack, Patrick Brice, Aislinn Clarke, Steven DeGennaro, Ruggero Deodato, Michael Goi, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Derek Lee, Lesley Manning, Doron Paz, Yoav Paz, Clif Prowse, Richard Raaphorst, Julian Richards, Dom Rotheroe, Kôji Shiraishi, Eduardo Sánchez, Stephen Volk, and André Øvredal.

In general, I’m not a fan of the found footage style. I have been underwhelmed by a lot more of these movies than I have been impressed by, so a documentary on the found footage phenomenon doesn’t instantly have my interest. Really the only reason I would watch this documentary is because Phillip Escott co-wrote and co-directed a great movie called Cruel Summer several years ago. But I know this style of filmmaking has a lot of fans who will be quite happy to watch a documentary about it, so I’m glad this exists for them.
