We still have two years to wait for GODZILLA: KING OF MONSTERS, director Michael Dougherty's follow-up to Gareth Edwards' 2014 GODZILLA. While five years pass between those Godzilla projects, at least the monster's home studio in Japan, Toho, is making their own Godzilla movies to hold us over. Last year, Toho gave us SHIN GODZILLA, and soon they'll be releasing the first Godzilla anime – a movie simply titled GODZILLA.
A release date for the GODZILLA anime has not yet been announced, but there is very good news for fans of the Big G who won't be able to make it to Japan to see the new movie in theatres: Netflix has picked up the streaming rights for the film and will be releasing it through their streaming service after the Japanese theatrical run. The Netflix release will make GODZILLA readily available for viewing in over 190 countries.
A collaboration between Toho and Polygon Pictures, the GODZILLA anime is directed by Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita, working with a script by Gen Urobuchi.
All details about the anime have been kept tightly under wraps, but more information is expected to be provided at the AnimeJapan event later this month.
Despite knowing nothing about the anime, I'm still eager to see it because it's a Godzilla project. I'm always eager to see any Godzilla movie that gets made. It's good to know that Netflix has me covered and will be letting me see this one in a timely manner.
