Hulu is giving us all the royal treatment today by debuting The Great Season 2 trailer. When the historical satire returns, Catherine (Elle Fanning) will gleefully assume the Russian throne, “but if she thought coup-ing her husband was difficult, it’s nothing compared to the realities of ‘liberating’ a country that doesn’t want to be,” says the official synopsis.

As high society shenanigans introduce clever twists to Catherine’s agenda, her mission to remain ‘Great’ will see her “battle her court, her team, even her mother, Joanna Elisabeth Holstein Gottorp (Gillian Anderson), in a bid to bring the enlightenment to Russia. Meanwhile, she’ll also battle her heart as Peter (Nicholas Hoult) slowly transitions from a much-hated husband to a prisoner? Ally? Lover? Ultimately Catherine will learn that to change a country, you must let it change you, that there is a fine line between idealism and delusion, and that becoming ‘Great’ will ask more of her than she could have imagined.”

Hulu’s The Great Season 2 trailer also features Gillian Anderson in action as Joanna. A glamourous socialite from Germany, Joanna is also known as the “maestro of marriage” for her ability to arrange high-profile partnerships for her daughters. She’s also known to meddle in affairs that aren’t her own, so Catherine will have to keep a watchful eye.

Season 2 of The Great welcomes Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow back to the show. The series is created, written, and executive-produced by Tony McNamara, and also executive-produced by Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Fanning, Hoult, Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoff, Andrew Spaulding, Josh Kesselman, Ron West, and Matt Shakman.

The Great Season 2 trailer is reminding me that I have yet to check this show out for myself. It looks positively hilarious, and I do enjoy a good period drama from time to time. With October quickly coming to an end, and another spooky season entering the rearview, I should be able to carve some time out for it soon.

Season 2 of The Great will premiere on Friday, November 19, on Hulu.
