“The remakes and sequels are coming! Ruuuunnn!”
One of my favorite movies of the last couple years is THE HOST, which I was lucky enough to see at the New York Film Festival last fall. It came out here in the States earlier this year, and while respected, it still didn’t make the splash I thought it should’ve. Damn you subtitles, don’t you know we hate reading!
But it has made about $88 million worldwide and I’m sure it will gobble up a bigger audience on DVD – so while we await details on a confirmed remake, the producers of the orignal are gearing up for a sequel.
Chungeoram Productions said shooting would begin this fall, with an eye towards releasing it in ‘08.
Crucially, Bong Joon-ho will no be involved, as he’s directing a different project (most likely the futuristic La Transperceneige). The Orphanage, the San Francisco-based company that provided the great effects the first time around, will also be replaced, by a homegrown Korean FX company.
The budget will be approx. 10 billion won – holy crap! It’s the most expensive – oh, well that translates to about 10.7 mil American bucks. It’s roughly the same budget the first one had (amazing, since that flick looks about 10 times better than the $250+million debacle SPIDER-MAN 3)
I’m not going to fret too much over this. I’d like to think it will be done in the same spirit as the first one – which means having a joyously unpredictable mix of satire, tragedy, family comedy, horror, and science-fiction. And archery – gotta have some archery.
