The Irregulars, Netflix, canceled

Well, if you were a fan of Netflix's The Irregulars, I hope you got your fill with the eight-episode first season because that's all there will be. Deadline has reported that Netflix has decided to cancel the series after a single season. Although Netflix does axe plenty of shows, most do last a little longer.

Set in Victorian London, The Irregulars followed a gang of troubled street teens who are manipulated into solving crimes for the sinister Doctor Watson and his mysterious business partner, the elusive Sherlock Holmes. As the crimes take on a supernatural edge and a dark power emerges, it’ll be up to the Irregulars to come together to save not only London but the entire world. The news of the cancellation comes as a bit of a surprise because according to streaming date released by Nielsen last week, The Irregulars was the top streaming show the week it debuted, even coming in ahead of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

"Our story focuses on the Irregulars, the gang themselves. It's their story, their adventure," The Irregulars creator Tom Bidwell told Entertainment Weekly before the series debuted in March. "Sherlock Holmes is in the story, it's his world, but he's not the central focus. He plays a big part of it, don't get me wrong, but it's about the kids and their journeys." As for the supernatural threats, Bidwell said that when he was reading the original novels, he kept wishing that those supernatural elements that were inevitably exposed as fraud were real. "In our show, the mysteries can be solved, but they can't be very easily explained with rational thought — there's monsters and ghouls and horrors attacking the city of London," Bidwell explained. Although the series is a bit of a departure from Holmes-lore, Bidwell said that he "didn't want to just take Sherlock and shred it to pieces just for the sake of doing it. I love the Sherlock Holmes books but I knew I wanted to make something very different, and make something that had a different type of Arthur Conan Doyle stamp on it." Will you miss The Irregulars?
