This past weekend we were hit with Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer's remake of Stephen King's PET SEMATARY starring Jason Clarke as Louis Creed and John Lithgow as Jud Crandall. And so we figured what better film to take on this week than director Mary Lambert's underappreciated follow-up PET SEMATARY TWO starring Edward Furlong, Anthony Edwards, Jared Rushton, Jason McGuire, Sarah Trigger, and Clancy Brown.
When his mother, Renee (Darlanne Fluegel), dies, young Jeff Matthews (Edward Furlong) moves back to his hometown with his father, Chase (Anthony Edwards). Jeff grows friendly with Drew Gilbert (Jason McGuire) at school, who tells him about the Indian burial grounds that bring people and animals back to life, which led to the deaths of the Creed family who used to live in town. Desperately missing his mom, Jeff ignores warnings and buries her corpse, only to have her return in deadly zombie form.
Personally, my favorite kill from the film has got to be when Edward Furlong's dad (played by Anthony Edwards) dispatches of the zombified Sheriff Gus Gilbert (Clancey Brown) with a bullet to the brain. He then walks out of the house, pauses, thinks, and then reenters the house and shoots the creature from sour ground another 3-4 times for good measure. Classic.
