HBO‘s The Last of Us trailer shows you a future where death lurks within every shadow and humankind is at odds with one another on all sides. Inspired by the best-selling Sony video game franchise, The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal (Joel), Bella Ramsey (Ellie), Nico Parker (Sarah), and Nick Offerman (Bill), each fighting to stay alive in unprecedented times.

Set to the song “Alone and Forsaken” by Hank Williams & The Drifting Cowboys, The Last of Us trailer paints a dark picture of survivors unwilling to trust, forming factions that fight for a different future. The moody footage features Joel and Ellie journeying through an apocalypse overrun by desperate humans, diseased victims, and desperation.

HBO’s official plot synopsis: “The series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”

Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin developed The Last of Us for HBO, with Naughty Dog co-president/The Last of Us game co-director/writer Neil Druckmann. While the HBO series does borrow from the best-selling video game franchise’s story, fans should expect plenty of surprises in the narrative.

Dripping with a dour atmosphere, The Last of Us trailer has this adaptation looking true to form and possibly more dramatic than the games themselves. Anyone who’s ever played The Last of Us knows it’s a roller coaster of emotions. Plus, did you see the shots of the Clickers? They look and sound amazing. For the uninitiated, Clickers are the result of a human infected with the Cordyceps brain infection at Stage 3 of their horrific transformation. There is no hope for them; they’ll kill you when they hear your boots trudging through the ruin. Your only hope of survival is to remain silent or run.
