Sylvain White’s action-packed revenge flick THE LOSERS goes wide later this month, so naturally the dude’s been pimpin’ and pluggin’ his wares of late. One stop on the promotion trail was last weekend’s WonderCon, where White took the opportunity to speak, or at least scoff at, the idea of helming a live-action adaptation of ROBOTECH, an animated sci-fi series that found popularity in the 80s. When grilled about whether or not the rumors are true, White responded:
“It’s not a project is green lit. It’s a great cult series. When it came out, I saw it in France when I was growing up – saw it in French. It’s an amazing cartoon. I hope it comes to fruition (Laughter). I’m interested in doing it. The project is not fast tracked. There is no official thing. They sent me a draft and I liked it. It’s a work in progress.”
When asked what timeline the adaptation would cover, White kept it simple:
“It’s the first generation.”
For those too young to remember the original “Robotech” series, here’s a quick rundown to get you acquainted:
Based on the sprawling sci-fi epic, “Robotech” takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship’s energy source known as “protoculture,” and the planet’s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.
Sound like a pretty cool premise, so what do you guys and gals think of White directing?
