Deadline reports that Will Patton (Horizon: An American Saga) will star alongside Matt Dillon in the upcoming MGM+ drama series based on The Magnificent Seven from Heroes creator Tim Kring.
Who Will Patton Play in The Magnificent Seven?
No, Patton won’t be a member of the titular seven. Instead, he’ll be the baddie. The actor will play Cyrus T. Clemons, a ruthless land baron out to expand his empire by any means.
“Clemons is confident, swaggering and convinced of his own destiny in the 1880s American frontier-set series,” reads the character description. “Before the Civil War, he was a humble music teacher. But after surviving the horrific battle of the Bloody Angle, he came out the other side realizing the world is made up of winners and losers, and he was bound and determined to come out on top, no matter the cost. He eventually meets his wife Beatrice and they cross the country. The town of Clemons is meant to be his crowning glory, but to achieve that, he needs the land owned by a peaceful, yet resolute group of Quakers. When they refuse to sell their land to Clemons, and hire the Magnificent Seven to fight back, Clemons is forced to use his private army to drive them from their land. But the further his plans unravel, the more desperate Clemons becomes.“
Dillon is playing Chris Adams, the character portrayed by Yul Brynner in the classic 1960 film. The original is one of my favourite Westerns, and one I often revisit. Such an amazing cast, with many of them at the beginning of their careers. Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn. Fantastic. Not to mention that wonderful score by Elmer Bernstein, which I hope returns in this TV series.
The Magnificent Seven Franchise
The first movie was a Western remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. Brynner reprised the role of Chris in Return of the Seven, but was replaced by George Kennedy for Guns of the Magnificent Seven and by Lee Van Cleef in The Magnificent Seven Ride.
A TV series starring Michael Biehn aired from 1998 to 2000, and the most recent adaptation was the 2016 remake directed by Antoine Fuqua, which featured an all-star cast led by Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, and more.
