The Mandalorian season 4 would have set up Ahsoka season 2: “It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn”

The Mandalorian was supposed to return for season 4; in fact, series creator Jon Favreau had said that scripts for all eight episodes were already written, but then the choice was made to pivot to the big screen with The Mandalorian and Grogu. Many fans believe that those TV scripts were simply retooled for the movie, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

What The Mandalorian Season 4 Would Have Been About

While speaking with SFX magazine (via GamesRadar), Favreau revealed that The Mandalorian season 4 would have connected with the second season of Ahsoka.

You can’t just take those scripts and turn them into a movie,” he said. “There were a lot of characters, it assumed you’d watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into [the second season of ] Ahsoka. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger storyline [of this era of the Star Wars timeline].

Favreau continued, “This is a completely different medium, so I had to start from scratch, essentially. There were certain things I wanted to pursue, like the idea of Grogu being the Mandalorian’s apprentice. As long as you understand the archetypes of this hardened warrior with their vulnerable young apprentice, you’ll know these characters well, even if you’ve never seen the show. But there’s still a lot of Star Wars in there. You’re going to see where things are going [in the wider universe], but that doesn’t diminish from the experience of watching it as a standalone film.

Is Disney Worried About the Movie?

A report earlier this year mentioned that The Mandalorian and Grogu is “something of a question mark” for the studio. Additionally, given that the film is based on a streaming series, it “may not seem like a big-screen proposition for any but the most die-hard Baby Yoda lovers.

This came on the heels of the film’s Super Bowl commercial, which felt like a real misfire. It leaned into a nostalgic, old-school Super Bowl commercial vibe, complete with narration by Sam Elliott and featured a pack of Tauntauns pulling Din Djarin and Grogu. This was the chance to introduce the film to one of the biggest audiences in the world, and it really should have been the proper trailer, which they ultimately released a week later.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that The Mandalorian and Grogu will be a fun time at the movies, but we also have Star Wars: Starfighter to look forward to next year.

The logline reads: “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.” The film will theaters on May 22.
