The Matrix 4: Christina Ricci joins cast, reunites with Speed Racer director

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

An official announcement hasn't been made, but those eagle-eyed folks over at Deadline have noticed the fact that Warner Bros. added Christina Ricci's name to the cast list for The Matrix 4 on an updated press kit. That makes the Matrix sequel a reunion for Ricci and director Lana Wachowski, as they previously worked together on the 2008 film Speed Racer (watch it HERE).

Ricci joins a cast that includes returning franchise stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Daniel Bernhardt, as well as franchise newcomers Jessica Henwick, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Eréndira Ibarra, Jonathan Groff, Andrew Caldwell, Ellen Hollman, Brian J. Smith, Max Riemelt, and Chris Sean Reid.

Plot details on The Matrix 4 have never been revealed. All we know is that franchise co-creator Lana Wachowski is directing the film from a screenplay she wrote with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Wachowski, Grant Hill, and James McTeigue are the producers, while Terry Needham, Garrett Grant, and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.

Lana Wachowski wrote and directed the initial Matrix trilogy with her sister Lilly Wachowski, but Lilly is not involved with this one. Lilly's Twitter bio includes the line, "Not on the new Matrix film, so stop asking me."

The Matrix 4 is scheduled to reach theatres and HBO Max on December 22, 2021.
