The Matrix 4 will be filming in Berlin when production resumes

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

After roughly a month of filming in the San Francisco area, THE MATRIX 4 was all set to move to Berlin and complete the shoot. The production was in "prep mode" in Berlin when Warner Bros. decided to shut it down until further notice, due to the continuing Coronavirus pandemic.

We'll have to wait and see if the shutdown will be long enough to alter the film's release schedule. Warner Bros. had already announced their intention to get THE MATRIX 4 into theatres on May 21, 2021

It's interesting to hear that San Francisco and Berlin are the locations for this sequel, as the previous MATRIX movies were primarily shot in Australia, in addition to some filming in California.

While the initial MATRIX trilogy was written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, it looks like Lilly is sitting this one out. Lana Wachowski is directing THE MATRIX 4 solo, working from a screenplay she wrote with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. She is also producing the film with Grant Hill.

Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith are reprising their roles from the previous films, and they're joined by franchise newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Eréndira Ibarra, Jonathan Groff, Andrew Caldwell, Ellen Hollman, Brian J. Smith, Max Riemelt, and Chris Sean Reid.

Lambert Wilson has said that his character from THE MATRIX RELOADED and THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS, data smuggler The Merovingian, is meant to be in the film but he might not be able to reprise the role due to scheduling issues. It's not clear at this time whether or not those scheduling issues were worked out.
