The music stops on Idris Elba’s Turn Up Charlie with Netflix cancellation

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Netflix is opting not to spin more records with Idris Elba's DJ-comedy, Turn Up Charlie. The streamer has cancelled the series after only one season.

The decision to cancel the series comes more than a year after the show made its debut on the service on March 15, 2019 Netflix had this to say about the cancellation:

"Turn Up Charlie will not return for a second season. We're especially grateful to stat and executive producer Idris Elba, who turned his passion for DJing into a witty, heart-warming comedy series. We're also thankful to executive producers Gary Reich and Tristram Shapeero and co-executive producers Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito, along with the dedicated cast and crew, for bringing this story to life on Netflix. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Idris on future projects."

Netflix, like most streaming services, doesn't release viewership info (unless they wan to brag) but I'm assuming, especially given that more people are at home due to the COVID-19 stay at home orders, that the streamer just didn't see the numbers they wanted to move forward with another season. Netflix typically isn't trigger happy when it comes to cancellations and usually have their reasons for not moving forward.

Turn Up Charlie ran for eight episodes and centered on the titular character played by Elba. Charlie is a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a "manny" to his famous best friend's problem-child daughter, Gabby (Frankie Hervey). The series also starred Piper Perabo & JJ Feild
